Today’s mass reading from Acts 7:51-60 about the martyrdom by stoning of St Stephen got me thinking about his courage, strength and faith. Stephen did not shy away from speaking the truth even though he knew it was not going to be very popular. Despite the animosity of the people, Stephen remained calm because he was “filled with the Holy Spirit … and saw the glory of God.” I need to remember Stephen’s example to remain calm in difficult situations and to rely upon the Holy Spirit to help me.
I love the French St Stephen medal in the Rosa Mystica Medals collection because it shows St Stephen or Etienne in French holding several stones and the inscription, which asks St Stephen to pray for us. I know I can use his prayers as I face a chaotic and quite often angry world.
