St Augustine was the son of St Monica. He was born in the 4th century and raised as a Christian, but as a young man he started a life of loose living and debauchery, making the patron saint of brewers. Through the prayers of his mother, he returned to the Christian faith, but still struggled until he read St Paul’s instructions to live a pure life in imitation of Jesus. He suddenly was fully converted and became a great priest an theologian. He is a doctor of the church.
