This medal features St Apollonia holding pinchers, which were used to pull out her teeth, and a palm branch which is the symbol of martyrs. The inscription around the edge is in Latin reads “Sancta Apollonia Ora Pro Nobis” and translates as “St Apollonia Pray For Us”.
St Apollonia was a Christian living in Alexandria during the persecutions of the Emperor Philip. While most of the Christians were fleeing the city, abandoning all their worldly possessions Apollonia, was seized. The crowds pulled out her teeth as a torture and lit a large fire, threatening to throw her in it if she did not curse her God. She begged them to wait a moment, and then jumped willingly into the flames and was martyred.
