This medal shows St Martina of Rome holding a palm branch symbolizing her martyrdom. Her name is spelled Martine, which is the French version of Martina.
St Martina was the daughter of a wealthy Christian Roman politician. When her parents died she gave away her riches to the poor and devoted herself to prayer. She was tortured and martyred for refusing to worship pagan gods.
One story of her death claims that when she was beheaded, her body bled milk. This led to her being the patron of nursing mothers.
