This medal is from France and the front shows Joan of Arc with a palm frond representing victory. At the bottom of the medal there are four dates: 1421 the year Joan was born, 1431 the year Joan was martyred, and 1909 the year Joan was beautified. The French inscription at the top says “Bienheureuse Jeanne d’Arc” which means Blessed Joan of Arc. The back shows the Basilica of Joan of Arc, which is located near Joan’s hometown of Domremy.
As a teenager Joan heard the heavenly voices of several saints instructing her to go help the king reclaim France from the English. At age 17 she was given a small army and captured the city of Orleans. She went on to have several amazing military victories. She attended King Charles VII’s coronation in Reims, but the next year she was captured and sold to the English who put her on trial for heresy and witchcraft. Joan’s answers her prosecutors with wit and bravery. Ultimately she was convicted of wearing men’s clothes (which she wore because they protected her modesty from her male guards) and burned at the stake in 1431 at age 19.
It was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece. It comes with a matching holy card in an organza gift bag, ready for gift-giving, and was made in the USA.
