This oval shaped medal from France shows the profile of St Jeanne of France who was the daughter of King Louis XI. Her name on the medal is the French spelling of Joan. She is shown wearing a queen’s crown because she was briefly Queen of France as the wife of King Louis XII before he had their marriage annulled by the Pope. The back of the medal is engraved with the Latin word Pax, which means peace.
St Jeanne of France, who is also know as Jeanne or Joan of Valois, was the daughter of King Louis XI. Because she was a girl and slightly disabled, she was hated by her father and sent to live with a caretaker in an isolated chateau. While there she developed a strong faith and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the age of 12, her father forced her to marry her cousin, Louis the Duke of Orleans. Her husband didn’t want to marry Jeanne and took every opportunity to embarrass and humiliate her, while she treated him with kindness and love. When Louis became the king of France in 1498, he had their marriage annulled by the Pope. This freed Jeanne to found “The Order of the Annunciation” and live out the rest of her life as a nun, which had been her desire from a very young age. She died in 1505.
St Jeanne de France is the patron of people in difficult situations.
The medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece. It comes with a matching holy card in an organza gift bag, ready for gift-giving, and was made in the USA.
