The French medal shows St Gregory of Tours in his bishop robes wearing his mitre and holding his crozier. The French inscription says “Saint Gregoire De Tours 539 – 1939.” The date 539 is the date of St Gregory’s birth and 1930 is the 1,400th anniversary of his birth. This medal was commissioned in honor of this anniversary.

The reverse side of the medal shows Our Lady of Marsat holding the young Jesus on her lap. This image is based on a statue of the Black Madonna in the Church of the Assumption in Marsat France. The inscription says “Notre Dame De Marsat Priez Pour Nous 18 Mai 1939” which means “Our Lady of Notre Dame of Marsat Pray For Us May 18, 1939.” The date presents when the statue in Marsat was crowned. St Gregory wrote about miracles attributed to Our Lady of Marsat.

St Gregory was born in 540 to a family of French nobility. While on pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint Martin of Tours, his piety led to his being chosen bishop of Tours, France in 573. St Gregory was a historian and writer and is known as the Father of French history.
