Size: approximately 1 1/8 inch by 3/4 inch
Material: Sterling silver with marcasite
This original antique sterling silver Miraculous Medal is oval shaped set on mother of pearl and surrounded by marcasite. The medal has its original ring. The medal was likely made in the 1920s or 1930s during the Art Deco era when marcasite was used as an inexpensive but beautiful substitute for more expensive diamonds.
The design of the Miraculous Medal as shown on the front was given to St Catherine Laboure during a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary she had in 1830. Mary gave specific instructions on the medal’s design and promised special graces to those who wore it. The medal shows the Virgin Mary with her arms outstretched as “Our Lady of Mercy”. The inscription around the edge reads “O Mary Conceived Without Sin Pray for Us Who Have Recourse to You”. The back of the medal shows the traditional back of the Miraculous Medal which
features the letter “M” surmounted by a cross and surrounded by 12 stars representing the 12 apostles. On the upper left is a Sterling mark and Theda, the manufacturer’s mark.
