This medal from France shows St John of God holding a cross to his chest. The French inscription reads “St Jean De Dieu Priez Pour Nous” which means “St John of God Pray For Us.” The back of the medal has the inscription “Jean De Dieu Grenade Sera Ta Croix” which means “John of God Granada Will Be Your Cross.” It was in Granada Spain where St John underwent a major spiritual experience.
St John of God was born in Portugal in 1495 to middle-class parents. At the age of 8 he was kidnapped by stranger and was later abandoned in Spain. St John worked as a shepherd before he joined the army of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. After his time in the military, St John became restless and eventually returned to Granada, Spain where he sold religious books. After hearing a sermon by St John of Avila, St John had a conversion experience. Afterwards he went into a state of insanity and was taken to the Royal Hospital. Despite cruel treatment, he recovered and was discharged. St John felt called to help the poor, sick and homeless and spent the rest of his life serving those ignored by society.
