This medal from shows St Charles Borromeo in his cardinal vestments kneeling in prayer with his right hand on his heart. The reverse side of the medal shows the symbols of his cardinalship: his mitre, crozier, chasuble and a Bible. The Latin inscription reads “Beati misericordes quoniam ipsi misericordiam consequentur” which means “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy.”
St Charles Borromeo was born to a wealthy, noble family and was the nephew of Pope Pius, IV. St Charles studied civil and canon law and studied under the future Pope Gregory XIII. He was abbot for several abbeys before was became a cardinal in 1560 at the age of 22. St Charles spent his life and fortune in the service of the people of his diocese. He enforced the decrees of the Council of Trent, defended the Church against the followers of Martin Luther, and founded schools for the poor, seminaries and hospitals. St Charles was a teacher, confessor and parish priest to St Aloysius Gonzaga, giving him his first communion.
