This medal show Pope John XXIII in profile. Pope John was pope for less than 5 years; however, he renewed the Catholic Church by convening the Vatican II Council. His heartiness, his overflowing love for humanity individually and collectively, and his freshness of approach to ecclesiastical affairs made him one of the best-loved popes of modern times. The Latin inscriptions reads ” Joannes XXIII Pontiefex Max.” Pontiefex Max. (Maximus) is a title given to the Pope.
The reverse side features Sts Peter and Paul. St Peter is holding the keys to Heaven which were given to him by Jesus, and St Paul is holding a sword, a means of his martyrdom.
This medal was cast from a vintage piece in my personal collection dating from about 1980 so it shows all the wear of the original. It has been tumbled for strength and oxidized to give it a vintage patina. Itl is made of sterling silver and will come with a matching holy card in an organza gift bag, so it’s ready to give as a present to someone else or yourself.
