This lovely small medal shows Pope Pius X in profile. The inscription reads “Pius X Pont. Max.” which is an abbreviation of the Latin Pontifex Maximus (Supreme Pontiff).
Pius X was elected pope on August 4, 1903 and ended at his death on August 20, 1914. As pope he promoted daily communion for Catholics, reformed the liturgy and reorganized the administrative elements of the Catholic Church. He also supported foreign missions.
The back of the medal shows St Peter holding the keys to the Church given to him by Jesus in Matthew 16:18. The inscription reads “St Petrus” which is the Latin version of Peter.
