John’s gospel tells us that “Jesus loved Martha, Mary and Lazarus”, so we know that the were close friends of Jesus, and that he visited their home in Bethany. During one visit, Martha was busy preparing a meal for them and their guests and was irritated because her sister, Mary, sat listening to Jesus instead of getting up to help her. When she asked Jesus to tell Mary to get up and help her, he replied with great love and understanding, saying that he knew she was anxious about many things, but the most important thing was being with and listening to Him. She clearly learned this lesson because the next time Jesus came to visit was after the death of her brother, Lazarus. Upon hearing that Jesus was near, she left everyone in the house and went out to meet him. At their meeting she expressed her faith in him as the son of God. Jesus went on to perform a miracle by raising Lazarus from the dead.
