This French medal shows St Rita gazing upon the crucifix. Between her and the crucifix are the thorns from Christ’s crown of thorns. The inscription around the top edge of the medal reads “St Rita P.P.N.” The P.P.N. is an abbreviation of the French phrase Priez Pour Nous, which means St Rita Pray For Us.

St Rita was born in Spoleto, Italy in 1381. Although she wanted to become a nun, her parents forced her into marriage. She was a good wife and mother, but her husband was a violent man who taught their two sons his evil and disrespectful ways. After being married 20 years, her husband was stabbed in a knife fight. Thanks to Rita’s prayers, he repented of his sins before he died. Her two sons died soon after this, so Rita fulfilled her dream of joining a convent. She was so devoted to the passion of Christ that once during prayer, a thorn from the crown of thorns pierced her forehead. The wound never healed and caused her much suffering. She died in 1457.
