Description

Size: a little under 5/8 inch
Material: Sterling Silver

This small medal shows St Colette with her hands raised in prayer. The inscription around the edge is in French and translates as “St Colette Pray For Us”. The reverse of the medal features St Clare of Assisi holding a monstrance with a matching inscription.

The medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece. It comes with a matching holy card in an organza gift bag, ready for gift-giving, and was made in the USA.

St Colette was born to an elderly couple in 1380. She decided to pursue a religious life, and at age 21 she became a Franciscan tertiary and an anchoress, living in a sealed chamber in the wall of a church with the only opening being a small grill through which she could see the Mass. She left her cell after receiving a vision of St Francis which told her to go reform the religious order founded by St Clare. She walked barefoot to receive the Poor Clare’s habit from Peter de Luna and then went from convent to convent to accomplish her task. She met extreme opposition and was even accused of witchcraft, but eventually founded 17 convents and helped St Vincent Ferrer heal the schism in the Catholic church.

When St Clare was a girl, she was so struck by the preaching of St Francis of Assisi that she confided her desire to live for God to him. He became her teacher and friend. She ran away from home with her cousin to become a nun and was later received into religious life by St Francis. She founded a religious order called the Poor Clares that is still in existence today. St Clare loved needle work, music, and caring for others. At the end of her life when she was to ill to go to mass, an image of the service appeared on the wall of her room leading to her patronage of television. She died in 1253.
