This medal features St Helen, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, holding a crucifix. The inscription is in French and reads “St Helen Pray for Us” The name Helen is spelled the French way “Helene”.
St Helen was married to the co-regent of the western Roman empire, Constantius Chlorus. Her husband divorced her to marry a younger woman with better political connections. When her son, Constantine, became emperor, he brought her back to the palace and treated her like a queen. Late in life, Helen went to the holy land seeking the true cross of Christ. She found three crosses and identified one as Christ’s when a woman with an incurable disease touched it and was immediately healed. She returned to Rome with the cross and spent the rest of her life spreading the message of Christianity. She died in 328.
It was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece. It comes with a matching holy card in an organza gift bag, ready for gift-giving, and was made in the USA.
