This modern-style St Valentine medal shows the saint looking at two flowers and carrying a palm branch to symbolize his martyrdom. Two joined hearts remind us of his patronage of lovers. The inscription shows his name in French, without the “e” – Saint Valentin”.
St Valentine was a priest who lived in Rome during the third century. His legend states that he was imprisoned for secretly marrying Christian couples. Thile in prison, he cured his jailor’s daughter of blindness, converting the jailor and his entire household to Christianity. He was later martyred for trying to convert the Roman emperor himself. One story states that he left the jailor’s daughter a note signed “Your Valentine”, beginning the tradition of giving loved ones notes in his name. His feast day became associated with love because of the belief in medieval England that February 14th is the date when all birds choose their mates.
The medal was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece. It comes with a matching holy card in an organza gift bag, ready for gift-giving, and was made in the USA.
