This lovely medal shows St Martin de Porres holding a crucifix. He is dressed in the robes of a brother of the Dominican order.
Born in Lima Peru in 1579, St Martin de Porres was the illegitimate son of a Spanish nobleman and a formerly enslaved woman. He began work as a servant at the Holy Rosary Dominican Priory in Lima. He was promoted to almoner and then put in charge of the infirmary where he was known for his miraculous cures. He became the first black person admitted to the Dominican order in 1603 and the first black saint in the Americas.
It was cast in sterling silver from an antique medal in the Rosa Mystica Collection so it shows all the beauty and history of the original piece. It comes with a matching holy card in an organza gift bag, ready for gift-giving, and was made in the USA.
