This lovely French medal shows St Isidore the Farmer praying to the Virgin Mary who is holding the baby Jesus. In the distance there is an angel plowing a field. The French inscription says “St Isidore Patron Of Farmers Pray For Us.” The back shows the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus, and the French inscription says “Our Lady Of The Fields Pray For Us.”
St Isidore was married to Maria de la Cabeza who also became a saint. He worked for a wealthy Spanish landowner and before going to work he would attend mass. One day, his fellow farm workers complained to their master that Isidore was always late for work in the morning. Upon investigation the master found Isidore at prayer while an angel was doing the ploughing for him. Isidore was declared a saint in 1622, with Saints Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, Teresa of Avila, and Philip Neri. Together, the group is known in Spain as “the five saints.”
